Chuck Jensvold: Writer collects the work of Charles Jensvold (January 6, 1954-June 10, 2005), a graduate of Occidental College and writer of stories and screenplays. Set mostly in Southern California and written in an ironic, deadpan style reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, Chuck's work updates Chandler's sardonic humor and knowing, hardboiled attitude for the L.A. of the '70s, a combination one critic described as “surf noir.”
This website is intended as a resource for scholars of Southern California noir and literary L.A. in the late ‘70s-early ‘80s. As well, it serves as an introduction to Chuck’s writing for Occidental students and lecturers in the Charles Jensvold Memorial Lecture series, an annual talk by a noted writer made possible by the generous financial support of the Jensvold family and Chuck's friend and fellow Oxy alumnus Steve Coll ('80).
Chuck Jensvold: Writer was architected and built by Tom Grauman ('83). Mark Dery ('82) served as site editor and wrote all unbylined texts. Alan Dubinsky ('82) assisted with the design, especially the typography, and created the banner-style illustrations that appear at the top of some pages. Professor Eric Newhall was unstintingly generous with his time, providing a vital institutional link to the English Department. Dale Ann Stieber, Special Collections Librarian and College Archivist in the Occidental College Library Special Collections & College Archives, where the original copies of the works on this site are archived, was enormously helpful, too.
